Statement from Mr. Harrow and Mr. Kreiter: Welcome to our Social Studies Unit for 2012. The focus of this years unit will be Ancient Egypt. Students will learn about government, economics and making decisions as part of a family and as part of a community though the context of Ancient Egypt. I don't want to give too many of the surprises away, but I can tell you this much... Your student will become a member of an Ancient Egyptian family. They will have a job and they will trade everyday at the market to get the things they need to survive and lead a prosperous life in Ancient Egypt. Many conflicts will arise which will challenge students to come up with creative solutions to problems faced by ancient Egyptians and also by citizens in the modern world. Along the way we will learn about many of the important aspects of Egyptian life such as jobs, art, gods, and Pharaohs. Below you will find some fun activities you can do with your student to give him/her a chance to show off what they are learning and to expand your student's knowledge beyond the classroom. Both of us can't wait to get this unit started, it is going to be a lot of fun.
Rational for Unit: This Storypath adaptation of Ancient Egypt will not only provide students with some interesting and engaging “kibbles and bits” about ancient Egypt but it will provide students with a deep understanding of how people lived long ago and how their lives are different but also very much the same as our lives today. Through this Storypath students will become members of an ancient society and will make descisions with their family groups about trading at the marketplace. The “critical incident” will force students to face a difficult situation as a community and decide how to best survive as a community and as a member of their family unit. Students will be faced with the reality of making descisions as a community with a pharaoh as ultimate ruler. They will learn how a critical incident effects all aspects of life and not just the lives of farmers. Students will face all these challenges as part of a famly group and will have to make descions with a partner while taking into consideration the needs of the family as well as the community. Ethical considerations include the problems faced under a pharaoh system of government. Students will also consider the issues involved in a society where only one member of the family is allowed to work which the female takes care of the home.
